File transfer help

Go to File Transfer Page

This site enables file downloads from UWBC facilities. Downloads are currently configured for the following facilities:

  • Bioinformatics Resource Center
  • DNA Sequencing
  • Gene Expression Center
  • Mass Spectrometry
  • How long should my download take???

Many of the files we make available are quite large. Here is an example:

Approximate times to download 20 GB:

  • 6 Mbps DSL connection: 7.4 hours
  • 60 Mbps cable modem: 45 minutes
  • 100 Mbps UW departmental connection: 30 minutes
  • 1 Gbps UW departmental connection: 3 minutes
  • Authentication

The file transfer page uses the same authentication system as the UWBC online ordering system. UW-Madison Campus users can log in using NetID authentication. This requires UWBC staff to enter your NetID (NOT your password) into our system. If you haven't provided your NetID to a UWBC facility you will not be able to log in.

If you forget your NetID password contact the DoIT Help Desk. We have no access to your NetID password.

    File Transfers

After you successfully log in you will see a list of directories, one for each UWBC facility that has files available for you to download. If you have not used a particular facility it will not be in the list. Each PI or company has one download directory - all users affiliated with that PI or company will be sent to the same directory on login.

Download directories are read only. You can download your files but not upload. Right-click on an item in the righthand pane (or control-click on a Mac) to bring up a menu allowing you to download your files.

Some facilities have upload directories. These are configured for uploads only. You cannot download anything from the upload directory.

    Zip Archives

If multiple files are selected or an entire folder is selected a zip archive will be created and downloaded. The previous restrictions on zip archive size have been removed. However, extracting large zip archives (> 4 GB) may require special software. Unarchiving utilities without this capability may tell you that the archives are corrupted, when they are actually OK.

    Browser Requirements

Most current browsers should work with this site. Javascript and cookies must be enabled in your browser.

    Network Requirements

This site will work on the campus wireless network for small downloads. For large downloads wireless is NOT RECOMMENDED. A wired connection will be MUCH faster!
